www.xml.com — a commercial site that includes some XML tutorials (under "Essentials”) and links to lots of useful articles. You may need to "join” the site (though a lot of it is public) but there’s no cost involved
On the XML site look at:

http://www.xml.com/pub/a/norm/part1/getstart1.html ) they appear to be initial versions
http://www.xml.com/pub/a/norm/part2/getstart2.html ) tutorials on how one might set about writing an XML processing application
http://www.xml.com/pub/a/w3j/s3.connolly.html — evolution of web documents
http://java.oreilly.com/news/farley_0800.html — an introduction to Microsoft’s .NET environment
http://xml.coverpages.org/ — another commercial site, but some possibly useful links on
http://xml.coverpages.org/xmlIntro.html
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?URL=/library/en-us/dnxml/html/beginner.asp —from the Microsoft web-site is also an introduction to XML programming.
Microsoft’s site has a number of other useful tutorials and other references
