File Generation Numbers

Each XML message file normally has a file generation number in it. This is a sequential number per customer per message type. If a customer system rejects a message for some reason, or it gets lost, then it may be necessary to send such messages again once the problem has been sorted. Some customers are relaxed about the file generation sequence, probably calling you if one is missing or duplicated. Others are strict in their use of the file generation number, and may require that retransmissions use the same generation number, but must use the next version number. See also Recreate Invoice Files above.

If you need to reset the file reference number for any message type for any customer, do this using this present option. Note that you should rarely need to do so if recreating an output message file, as either you will re-use the same file generation as the original file, or you will use the next number anyway.

Note that you should reset the file generation to the number before the number you wish to be given in your next message — which is the number of the last one accepted by the customer, therefore.
