XML Audit Log

As well as the audit trail report, a separate log of all XML actions, including anything printed on the XML audit trail reports is recorded in a text file. This could be of particular benefit when XML processes are run automatically, as this provides a single source for the XML actions taken and any errors encountered.

If a single log file maintained (see XML General Configuration) it is named DFXML.LOG and is held in the Datafile preferences area (often the root Datafile folder). The alternative is that individual log files are maintained for each XML transaction, in which case the log file is called XML.LOG, and it is held in the definition folder for each XML transaction.

An example of an audit log file is shown on the next page. For each file processed it records the date, time, user, XML process (both the XML transaction menu number and the process action code) plus the name of the XML file imported or created. This log is a useful diagnostic tool should things go wrong. It can be cleared down using a text processor such as Microsoft’s Notepad accessory at (say) monthly intervals, leaving the most recent log entries still present.
